A school year is usually cut up into semesters. Usually a quarterly exam is an exam that will check the students knowledge at the quarter mark in a semester.
If a semester is 6 weeks long, the quarterly exam will be at around 3 weeks into the class.
This is a knowledge check to see how well the student understands the information up to this point. The exam grade can show how well the student understands the information, or if the student needs to study more in a unit of the lesson.
If a student scores low in one section, they can study and gain more knowledge in that area.
